I love this blanket.
When you give a stressed out person some thick yarn and a big crochet hook, things move pretty fast. Haha. I started working on this giant granny square blanket over the weekend and quickly discovered that it is a yarn eater. Is that a thing? The blanket "eats" it up so fast that I am almost out of the yarn I bought on Friday afternoon. After a certain point in the pattern, each round needs almost an entire ball of yarn! That's why the green yarn ball is so tiny. I need to stock up next time I go to the craft store. (The yarn I am using is Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in Fleece, Pewter, Stone, and Spearmint.)
I wanted to share a few photos of my progress so far. I love how the colors look together! The next color round will be a navy blue and then I will start repeating the stripes until it is done. I think I will make it 84 in. x 84 in. square.
It is the perfect project to work on before going to bed each night. I am so glad I finally decided to start this blanket!
How are your projects coming along? Do you like to work on something before bed too?

Aaaw you're doing so much better than me. I started the same pattern just after Christmas, ran out of wool and haven't stocked up yet, so it's been sat unfinished for a month! I love the colours you've used. x
ReplyDeleteIt looks great so far! It looks just like the blanket my boyfriends grandma made (only it's mostly green and white) him. We still have it and use it whenever were cold.
ReplyDeleteSsoo pretty! I'm working on a bunch of small projects right now for a potential (and my first! eeeek!) craft show in May!
ReplyDeleteit's looking lovely! what a nice thing to do before bed. i don't have any 'right before bed' activities, but i do knit almost every night.
ReplyDeletethat looks good. A co-worker just made a blanket for her daughter using thick yarn and she was able to get it done in almost a week. A friend just commissioned me to make a blanket so I started working on that. Crocheting is a nice activity before bed. It helps calm the mind for sleepy time.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely Meredith!! Crochet seems to use loads more yarn than knitting but it's worth it in the end, you'll be finished before you know it and it will look fab :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love the colors you chose..very serene

I am making a blanket from Purl Bee as well - but it is this one http://purlbee.squarespace.com/bears-rainbow-blanket/
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to work on small granny square projects, and then piece it all together at the end. I've only done about five squares in my spare time - 100 to go haha.
Your blanket will turn out lovely! The best thing about this sort of project is that it keeps your legs warm as you crochet. How is that for motivation!

That blanket is beautiful! Thank you for sharing! :)
DeleteYour blanket looks darling. What kind of yarn are you using? When I saw that blanket on The Purl Bee my jaw dropped at the thought of buying 53 (!!) skeins of yarn, so I'm going to make a throw sized one. But even then, I think I will have to buy the yarn a few skeins at a time so it feels like I'm spending less money lol.
ReplyDeleteI am using Loops & Threads Cozy Wool from Michaels. I did the same thing when I first looked at the pattern! Haha.
DeleteOh this is beautiful!! I love how its coming along... gorgeous!! I've just been making grannys for a blanket, working on a couple cowl scarfs and today I started crocheting a case for my Nook :) Happy crocheting friend!! xo Holly
ReplyDeleteIt's looking wonderful! I have one in progress right now as well and it is definitely a stress reliever!
ReplyDeleteWow that blanket looks so cute! The green is so vibrant! :)
ReplyDeleteYarn eater or not, it's absolutely gorgeous! Can't believe you've gotten this far on it already. Today was so super stressful, so I hope to re energize a bit tonight while finishing a few orders and watching some good TV.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the blanket so far, can't wait to see it finished!
Thank you Abby! I hope today was less stressful. :)
Deleteooooh I'm loving this. My granma used to knit blankets like this for each and every person in the family! Yes, they're yarn eaters! :D but it looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeletegood job!!!!
ReplyDeletexxx Ale
AH! It looks so incredibly perfect and neat - this reminds me that I need less distractions while crocheting ;)
ReplyDeleteOoooh What yarn is that?
ReplyDeleteI am using Loops & Threads Cozy Wool from Michaels!
DeleteI love this! I've only ever worked with Granny Square blankets, but I'd love to try something out like this. Just out of curiosity, where do you typically get your yarn? What kinds of yarn do you typically prefer? Most importantly, what is the yarn you are using for that blanket?! Its gorgeous and not typical of the chunky yarns I see at my local JoAnns.

I am using Loops & Threads Cozy Wool from Michaels for this blanket. I love experimenting with all kinds of yarn! I usually get my yarn from Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or The Shabby Sheep here in Dallas. I also order yarn online from Yarnmarket.com!
DeleteLove your blanket! Really want to get one started too!
ReplyDeletehow beautiful
ReplyDeleteglad to find your blog!
ReplyDeleteI'm a newbie in knitting and crocheting. Check out some of them here : http://kinssy.blogspot.com/p/the-projects.html

Oooh...these are the best, aren't they? I made a giant one with a huge crochet needle and chunky yarn and it was the quickest most awesome thing I ever made! Your colors are lovely, too... :)
ReplyDeleteThey don't call them wool eaters for nothing.
ReplyDeleteLovely blanket what brand yarn you used.? Thanks

ReplyDeletei've just satrted to learn crochet and am my second grannie square blanket alhtough the first one is really just a little lap rug, i'm hoping the one i'm on will be ready for my mum for mothers day in a weeks time! eeeek!
ReplyDeleteLoving the colours. I'm working on a cardi using kidsilk haze and just cast on 2ply to make a beautiful Lace Shawl from Victorian Lace Today book called Melon.
ReplyDeleteohhh, I never thought of doing a giant granny square blanket, it looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteYour blanket is looking great!! After seeing you talk about this pattern I decided Im going to make this blanket as a gift for one of my best friends who is getting married! Also this past weekend I started working on Cotton and Clouds Mikan Snood and I'm loving it so far. have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! I'm sure your friend will love it!
DeleteThat looks really great!
ReplyDeleteI made a very similar kind of blanket for my little niece last summer. It was a fun project indeed. You can see mine from here: http://elakepaiviaodotellessa.blogspot.fi/2012/08/ellan-peitto.html
This is looking beautiful! I first learned to knit and then when I started crocheting I was surprised at how much more yarn per stitch it uses. My family is really big into making handmade gifts and my mom and I joke that if we have more time than money, we'll knit you something. But if we have more money than time, we'll crochet it. haha!
ReplyDeleteHaha! So true!
DeleteThis looks fab, I can't believe how quickly it has come together - I love huge granny squares, I lust over the one at purlbee ... I'm thinking of doing one of these for our living room, but it's way down my to-do-list, first I have to do a blanket for each of my 3 kids (I'm still only half way through the ripple i"m making for my boy), and that is inbetween all the other little mini-projects that pop up to distract me!!
ReplyDeletexx
Aaah I'm yet to master the crochet. Maybe I'll take a few lessons so I could make a lovely granny square blanket like yours one day.
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting a circular scarf at the moment, but I need to knit fast so I can actually wear it before the weather warms up! My favourite thing to do before bed (or anytime) is to listen to an audio book or podcast while knitting. I highly recommend it!
It's so simple.. I love you! <3 I'm planning to start to knit something!
ReplyDeleteThis looks so stunning and beautiful! I hope I can create a blanket as beautiful as this one day. My crocheting is still very new. :)
ReplyDeleteThe colours are beautiful! Can't wait to see the finished blanket.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors and yarn!! I bet it's going to be a soft cuddly blanket when you are done.
ReplyDeleteThe color combination is awesome! I'm starting a granny square bag project, gonna make it for my friend. Don't know when I can finish it. Hope I am able to crochet one square a day! >.<

I made a similar blanket and totally agree to it's yarn-eateryness; I kept mine small but sometimes think about adding to it
ReplyDeleteI love you blanket project! Cant wait to see it finished :)
ReplyDeleteI'm working on a giant granny square too and YES it eats allll the yarn! Mine is here if you want to look at it: http://www.fifteensixteen.com/2013/03/im-a-hooker/
ReplyDeletepretty colour of yours, love it. i have trouble for mixing colors. Mine was red and blue mixed. Still working on it.
