When you give a stressed out person some thick yarn and a big crochet hook, things move pretty fast. Haha. I started working on this giant granny square blanket over the weekend and quickly discovered that it is a yarn eater. Is that a thing? The blanket "eats" it up so fast that I am almost out of the yarn I bought on Friday afternoon. After a certain point in the pattern, each round needs almost an entire ball of yarn! That's why the green yarn ball is so tiny. I need to stock up next time I go to the craft store. (The yarn I am using is Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in Fleece, Pewter, Stone, and Spearmint.)
I wanted to share a few photos of my progress so far. I love how the colors look together! The next color round will be a navy blue and then I will start repeating the stripes until it is done. I think I will make it 84 in. x 84 in. square.
It is the perfect project to work on before going to bed each night. I am so glad I finally decided to start this blanket!

Aaaw you're doing so much better than me. I started the same pattern just after Christmas, ran out of wool and haven't stocked up yet, so it's been sat unfinished for a month! I love the colours you've used. x
ReplyDeleteIt looks great so far! It looks just like the blanket my boyfriends grandma made (only it's mostly green and white) him. We still have it and use it whenever were cold.

ReplyDeletethat looks good. A co-worker just made a blanket for her daughter using thick yarn and she was able to get it done in almost a week. A friend just commissioned me to make a blanket so I started working on that. Crocheting is a nice activity before bed. It helps calm the mind for sleepy time.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely Meredith!! Crochet seems to use loads more yarn than knitting but it's worth it in the end, you'll be finished before you know it and it will look fab :)

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to work on small granny square projects, and then piece it all together at the end. I've only done about five squares in my spare time - 100 to go haha.
Your blanket will turn out lovely! The best thing about this sort of project is that it keeps your legs warm as you crochet. How is that for motivation!

When I saw that blanket on The Purl Bee my jaw dropped at the thought of buying 53 (!!) skeins of yarn, so I'm going to make a throw sized one. But even then, I think I will have to buy the yarn a few skeins at a time so it feels like I'm spending less money lol.

DeleteI love this! I've only ever worked with Granny Square blankets, but I'd love to try something out like this. Just out of curiosity, where do you typically get your yarn? What kinds of yarn do you typically prefer? Most importantly, what is the yarn you are using for that blanket?! Its gorgeous and not typical of the chunky yarns I see at my local JoAnns.

This is looking beautiful! I first learned to knit and then when I started crocheting I was surprised at how much more yarn per stitch it uses. My family is really big into making handmade gifts and my mom and I joke that if we have more time than money, we'll knit you something. But if we have more money than time, we'll crochet it. haha!

DeleteThis looks fab, I can't believe how quickly it has come together - I love huge granny squares, I lust over the one at purlbee ... I'm thinking of doing one of these for our living room, but it's way down my to-do-list, first I have to do a blanket for each of my 3 kids (I'm still only half way through the ripple i"m making for my boy), and that is inbetween all the other little mini-projects that pop up to distract me!!

ReplyDeleteI'm knitting a circular scarf at the moment, but I need to knit fast so I can actually wear it before the weather warms up! My favourite thing to do before bed (or anytime) is to listen to an audio book or podcast while knitting. I highly recommend it!
